While predicate adjectives are not part of the ein-word adjectives, it is important to discuss briefly their position and use. Predicate adjectives take the most basic, unaltered form of the adjective, and don't take any endings unless they are in the comparative or superlative forms [link to comparative and superlative]. These adjectives are linked to the nouns they describe with a verb such as sein, werden, or heißen.
Der Esel war schon alt.
The donkey was already old.
Das alte Tier wurdeschwach.
The old animal gotweak.
Der Meinung seines Herren nach wurde er einfach untauglich für die Arbeit.
According to his owner, he simply becameunsuitable for work.
Attributive adjectives after ein-words
Adjectives that follow indefinite articles (ein, eine, keine, keinen, etc.) or the other ein-words: mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer (in any case), and precede the nouns they describe, take so-called strong endings. These endings apply whether the adjective is in the basic form or in the comparative or superlative forms. Remember that there is no plural form for the indefinite article ein.
Der Esel wusste, dass keinguter Wind wehte, und lief weg.
The donkey knew that an ill wind [lit: nogood wind] was blowing and ran away.
Als er einkurzes Weilchen gelaufen war, sah er einenalten Jagdhund auf dem Weg liegen.
When he had gone ashort distance, he saw anold hunting dog lying on the road.
Der Hund war sehr traurig, denn er hatte seinenehemaligen Herrn enttäuscht.
The dog was very sad, because he had disappointed hisformer owner.
To determine the correct adjective ending, determine the gender of the noun the adjective describes (masculine, feminine, neuter or plural), then determine what case the noun is in the sentence or phrase (nominative, accusative, dative, or genitive).
