ausgeben | verb | to spend | |||||||
Details:to spend (money) This separable-prefix verb, literally meaning "to give out," describes paying Money for Goods. Since it is clear that in commercial transactions a Buyer pays with Money, the word "Geld" ("money") or the actual amount is not always realized, e.g. "Ich habe viel / wenig im Urlaub ausgegeben." ("I spent a lot / little during my vacation."). Note that unlike English "spend," "ausgeben" is not used with the object "time." Instead, German uses the expression "Zeit verbringen" ("to spend time"). This verb is used in other frames with different meanings (e.g. "to hand out," "to issue," "to dispense," "to impersonate," among others). Sie gibt Geld im Café aus. / She spends money in the coffee shop. |
